Expressive Art
Expressive Therapy is the use of art (e.g. painting, drawing, journal writing, and poetry) as a form of therapy. The process of creating is emphasized in the therapy sessions rather the final art product itself. The use of art in therapy offers clients a safe and powerful way to express their feelings, memories, and intuitions that are not always accessible through the spoken word. No prior art experience is necessary.
Through incorporating art into counseling sessions, the therapist helps the client in the following ways:
- Discover the use of art as a means of communication, releasing of emotions, and ability to work through problems
- Tap into the creative process for personal growth and wellness
- Make sense and order of one’s life
Bring clarity, new insights, and goal setting to the forefront
