Some people dealing with mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, anger, irritability, sleep problems, and a number of other symptoms will require medication to help them feel better. Often these medicines can be used short term but some people may also require ongoing use of drug therapy to continue to feel well. There is much information about psychiatric medication which we address on our About Medicine page.
Psychiatric medication can only be prescribed by a licensed medical doctor. Psychiatrists are specifically trained in the appropriate use of this intervention. Many primary care doctors, internists, neurologists, OB-GYN and other medical specialists have experience or some training in this area as well.
Northwest Behavioral Medicine has a number of psychiatrists who are experts in the use of psychiatric medicine and are called psychopharmacologists. We specialize in treating and managing conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, eating disorders, schizophrenia and other problems with pharmacotherapy. We also work with counselors and physicians in the community as well as medication consultants. Please contact us for more information if you need a consultation regarding whether medicine can be helpful to you or to assess if you are on the right medicine.
